More than 12,000 young people took advantage of the free swimming offered to them during the Easter holidays. Wiltshire Council announced earlier this year it was to fund free swimming for under 16s during school holidays.
Some leisure centres in the county reported that the number of young people swimming this Easter had almost doubled on the previous year. At Salisbury’s Five Rivers Leisure Centre alone a staggering 3,077 young people went to the centre for a swim – compared to 1,732 in Easter 2011. In total 12,143 young people took part in free swimming across Wiltshire.
The Easter holidays provided the first opportunity for children aged up to 16 to take advantage of this new offer.
Conservative Cabinet member for leisure Cllr Stuart Wheeler said:
Free swimming for the under 16s will next be available during half term in June.
