The project to improve Salisbury Market Place is taking major steps forward with work expected to start in March.
Salisbury Area Board received more than 100 responses to a survey which asked local people and business owners what type of lighting and seating they would like to see feature in the Market Place. The responses will now be collated and will help inform the decision.
The aim behind the project, which is being led by Salisbury Area Board, is to work with local people to revamp this important area in the city. The plans include repaving the Market Place with granite and yorkstone, adding new seating and lighting, and building new disabled toilet facilities.
The Market Place will be completely pedestrianised making it a large, car-free, open space which can be used for events to draw people to the city all year around.
The removal of parking spaces will mean the space can be used more easily for events which bring the Salisbury community together, as the procedures currently needed to suspend parking in the area could cause delays.
Although the plans will see parking spaces removed from the Market Place so it can be pedestrianised, there will be extra spaces for blue badge holders created nearby meaning the total number of disabled spaces in the area will increase from 12 to 22. The parking plans are subject to a consultation which is taking place and closes on Monday (January 14).

“We have worked very hard with local people to come up with a design that fits with their aspirations for the squares. We have had more than 1,500 survey responses, a large working group which has looked at the issues in detail and several Area Board meetings where these issues have been discussed. At every stage ideas have come out which improve the scheme. I am really looking forward to seeing the new Market Place and re-furbished New Canal Street later in the year.”
The design for the Market Place was developed in consultation with the Market Place Working Group, which is made up of local people. The design was also shaped by more than 1,500 people who commented as part of Salisbury Area Board’s recent survey.
