A developer's multi-million pound deal to buy the Bath Road and Bridge Centre site in Chippenham could change the face of the town forever.
After months of negotiating, developer ING has sealed an agreement to buy the three-acre site in the centre of the town.
Retail giants Marks & Spencer, Next and Lidl are understood to be interested in coming to the development, which would also include smaller shops, a new car park and offices.
The developer, which is set to put in a planning application for the site early next year, also wants to redevelop the traffic bottleneck around the Bridge Centre. But Wiltshire Council has told it that its plans must dovetail with the 750 homes development at Birds Marsh.
Plans for that development will be submitted in January or February.
John Clark, chairman of Chippenham Vision, said he is delighted about the proposed developments to the town.
“The Nexts and M&S’s of the world are certainly the type we hope to attract. Services currently at the Bridge Centre will be relocated, or they will pay a fixed amount of money to Wiltshire Council to stay in that area.”
