Conservatives promoting healthy living course for children and families

SHINE (Self-Help, Independence, Nutrition and Exercise) has been adapted for use in the county by Wiltshire Council. It was originally developed by SHINE Health Academy to support children who are above their healthy weight range.

According to the 2011/2012 National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP), One in three children aged 10 to 11 in Wiltshire are obese or overweight. Nationally, obesity in children in this age range has risen in recent years.

SHINE is a 10 week programme for children and their family which aims to provide support to the family to make the necessary changes to lead a healthier lifestyle. The programme educates, supports, guides, and shows the fun element of a very serious problem around unhealthy lifestyles and weight which now affects more than one million young people in the UK.

Cllr Keith Humphries, Conservative cabinet member responsible for public health, said: “SHINE has the potential to help children lead healthier, more active lives and I am pleased we have already had such a good take up of the programme. Rolling this out across the county will give more people the chance to get support and stay healthy.”
